Interact! 7 blog layout tips to engage your reader – The Flourishing Abode

Why is it that we blog? Why not just write in a journal? The specific answers may vary, but in the end it all comes down to the audience – the readers. Maybe you want to make people laugh, maybe you want to offer people help, maybe you want to share stories, maybe you want to draw traffic to make money. It’s all variations on a theme: finding readers. Because if we didn’t want readers, we would just write in in a private journal. So when people land on your site, if they are your target readership, you want them … Read more

DIY Blog Design: Stylesheet? Coding? Fear not! – The Flourishing Abode

If coding and customizing your WordPress theme sounds too scary – then this post is for you! (This is part 4 of my DIY Blog Redesign series… a little more techy for this post, and next week we’ll be back on the artistic.) Admission: I designed my blog look – and starting out, I knew next to nothing of how to do CSS. Now, granted, I did know a fair amount of HTML, but I still had to start from scratch on CSS – and it wasn’t too bad. My point is this … don’t be intimidated by coding and … Read more

creative biz – 4/4 – The Flourishing Abode

Are you a local explorer? You’d love it!! Few things inspire me creatively more than this. Not sure? Ok, I’ll give you some reasons – and then some helpful tips and tricks. 🙂 All of the photos in this post are from my local explorations here in Knoxville! I’ve lived in several awesome places in the past — places that other people take trips to go visit. (Prague/Czech Republic, Gettysburg/PA, Tampa/FL..) But one thing that completely took me aback was how people who had lived there their whole lives had never taken the opportunity to go see the sights! I … Read more

travel – 2/2 – The Flourishing Abode

Greetings from the land of Dunkin Donuts, crazy traffic, lobsters and rocky beaches – we’re in New England! I simply love road trips. And this one is especially exciting for a couple reasons – first of all, we are getting to see both my family in Pennsylvania, and my husband’s family in Rhode Island, as well as many other friends along the way! But the other exciting thing is that this trip is hopefully the prelude to a more permanent type of road trip: moving! We are hoping and praying to be able to move to Boston soon. This week … Read more

Omnomnom: Grilling Onions – The Flourishing Abode

Some things just go together. Salt and pepper, Fred and Ginger, movies and popcorn, ninjas and pirates. Ok, maybe that last one is more of a feud than a pairing. But recently we discovered a food pairing so delicious, I don’t know why these two aren’t as inseparable as salt and pepper—- Steak and grilled onion. Meet Tim: resident grilling expert and husband Ohhhhhh, its SO good. I mean, at restaurants steak sauce is generally offered, but I really think there should always be grilled onion. Try it the next time you grill, and I think you’ll be hooked. Choose … Read more

Seek the things above: Being Thankful – The Flourishing Abode

Hello all! Still blogging from New England at this time, we will be here through the end of the week, Lord willing. We have really been enjoying the time here, and today we are out exploring Boston, Tim is job hunting, and I am apartment hunting and so forth. 🙂 So far on Wednesdays we’ve been doing the “Seek the things above” series, and within the next couple of weeks I want to start taking that in a little bit of a new direction. There are several different topics related to the Bible that I would like to delve into … Read more

printables – 3/3 – The Flourishing Abode

Well, this past week was week one of my Adventure a Week Challenge, and I think we are off to a great start!  I made an illustrated free printable, and its available at the end of the post, for anyone else who would like to do this scavenger hunt adventure, so be sure not to miss it: Pin It When I first mentioned to my four year old daughter that we were going to have an adventure a week, she was thrilled. I told her we might do a nature scavenger hunt, and she said, “Ooooh, how about a pirate … Read more

love – The Flourishing Abode

I just love the following verse. It’s been awhile since I’ve made any more verse printables, and the principle of this verse is something that we, as a family, have been talking about lately, so I decided to make it into a printable. Plus, I’ve been wanting to tell you about the “Family Improvement Game”, and it just ties in so well … Openness in family communication is just soooo important. And by openness, I don’t mean just-say-the-first-thing-that-comes-into-your-head-who-cares-if-it-is-kind-or-right … I don’t think that is what this verse is talking about, and is directly opposite of being “quick to hear, slow … Read more
