Challenge: An Adventure a Week – The Flourishing Abode

Yep, it’s cabin fever season! And so I’m starting a new challenge – an adventure a week. My four year old daughter drew an adorable valentine card for me with a picture on it of us driving in the car. I asked her what it was a picture of, and she said “You and me going on adventures!” She often talks about how much she loves our “adventures”, and I realized that we haven’t been have enough of those lately. And especially this time of year we are itching to be getting back outside again! So I told her today … Read more

family – 4/4 – The Flourishing Abode

Well, this past week was week one of my Adventure a Week Challenge, and I think we are off to a great start!  I made an illustrated free printable, and its available at the end of the post, for anyone else who would like to do this scavenger hunt adventure, so be sure not to miss it: Pin It When I first mentioned to my four year old daughter that we were going to have an adventure a week, she was thrilled. I told her we might do a nature scavenger hunt, and she said, “Ooooh, how about a pirate … Read more

art – 2/2 – The Flourishing Abode

I’m very excited about a project I’m involved in this year – Art House Co-op’s 2012 Sketchbook Tour! Basically, it’s like a music tour, but with art instead of music. Many artists are sending in sketchbooks to the project, and then all of our sketchbooks are going on tour around the country, visiting various major cities where anyone can come and browse through them and enjoy the artwork. My little sketchbook will be going along for the ride! I was able to choose from a variety of offered “themes” for my sketchbook … I went with the theme “Fill me … Read more

exploring – 2/2 – The Flourishing Abode

Well, our weekly adventure challenge continues! (If you haven’t seen the challenge post yet, you can see it here.) Last week I shared our pirate nature scavenger hunt, and it was geared more specifically for small children. This time for our second adventure we did an activity which isn’t targeted at any specific age, and can be enjoyed by pretty much anyone. (Although, confession – I cheated a little on the “weekly” this time. I’ve been posting the week after the adventure, but we didn’t go on an adventure last week due to sickness, we are doing two this week … Read more

Truth and Evidences Series

What is nothing? It is not what is inside an empty shoebox … that is still something. There is air, dust particles, heat, etc. in there. Nothing is not just a tiny bit of something. Nothing is not any thing. Nothing is no thing. Last week, in the Truth & Evidences series, we talked about how the material universe had a beginning, and the scientific evidences there are for that. In the past, scientists thought that perhaps the universe was eternal, but as more and more scientific data has come to light, it points more and more to the fact … Read more

Truth & Evidences: Macro-evolution vs. Micro-evolution – The Flourishing Abode

I almost started off by referencing “last week’s post” … but since I’m now on the every-other-week schedule for Wednesdays while we are in the process of moving, I guess it was actually two weeks ago! Anyway, in the previous post from this Truth & Evidences series we talked about the problems of where life could have come from in the first place if it didn’t come from a Designer. (If you’re new to this series, you can click here to see that post, or you can click here to see a list of all the previous posts from this … Read more

bible – 4/4 – The Flourishing Abode

As harsh icy weather slams much of the country here in the doldrums of winter, its easy to get hit with cabin fever! So here are a few photos I took at the local university gardens (back when it was warm) to cheer your day. You know, I am very thankful that God made seasons. I would not want to live in the hot days of August all year, nor would I want it to be perpetually February. They say variety is the spice of life, and I am thankful for the variety of seasons! And I will be especially … Read more

Join us in Boston for Bible Study! – The Flourishing Abode

Usually on Wednesdays, I’ve been writing a series on Truth & Evidences, but I’m going to have to postpone that until the beginning of October. Until then, on Wednesdays I’ll probably offer some new Bible verse printables. But first I wanted to be sure and invite any of you who may be in the Boston area to come to Bible study – there is a small group meeting in the Union Gym and anyone is welcome to come! We are not part of any denomination, we are just a group of local Christians trying to follow the Bible, and to … Read more

Starting back up the “Truth & Evidences” Series – The Flourishing Abode

Well, our timeline has definitely been a little different in Boston than I had expected, but I did mention wanting to start back up the Truth & Evidences series during October … and, hey, there are a couple hours left. 🙂 Since its been a couple months since I took a break from the series during the craziness of moving, this post will just be a recap, and then I’ll plan to continue this series every other Wednesday, Lord willing, as we were doing earlier. The topic of this series of posts is a discussion of whether there is actual … Read more

Truth & Evidences: The First Life – The Flourishing Abode

We’ve talked before in the Truth and Evidences series about how anything at all could have come into existence. Today, in particular, we’re going to be looking at the first life. My dad still has my fourth grade science book. It is a clear example of how scientists try to break the rules of science to try to explain their views. On one page it talks about how “spontaneous generation” has been disproven – how people used to think that mice actually came from dirty clothes, or that flies came from dead meat. And the book explained how through the … Read more
