It was a lovely day: WinterFest 2012 – The Flourishing Abode

Yes, snow! This is my little girl playing in the snow the day before WinterFest. We decorated the walls with twinkle lights and snowflakes we made. Why not combine storage and decor? I kept bows in a big bowl on the book shelf. 🙂 My little one love to help stir while I am cooking, she’s my little helper! For dinner on WinterFest-Eve, I made Curried Butternut Squash Soup and little poppyseed ham and swiss sandwiches. Soup and sandwiches make great winter meals! My husband, Tim, makes breakfast on WinterFest … this year he made blini, a thin Russian pancake … Read more

Life in the city – The Flourishing Abode

Boston Skyline Photograph by Elizabeth Thomas Photo I’m really loving living in a city again. I love the busy-ness of a city, the variety of experiences. We explored Chinatown last week and tried some delicious new kinds of food … there was a strange bulbous brown thing on top of one of the dishes that turned out to be some sort of delicious marinated egg. Plus, I finally got to try bubble tea .. in mango, my favorite fruit! Our little girl turned 5 within a few days of arriving in Boston, and her main present from us was that … Read more

This year I will conquer you, pumpkin! – The Flourishing Abode

Every year I tell my husband I want to carve a pumpkin.  Then I go and get a pumpkin.  Last year, we even went to a farm, took a hayride out to the pumpkin patch and picked out the perfect pumpkins to carve. Then I set the pumpkin on the front porch.  There is sits.  Uncarved. Until it rots. I so want to carve a pumpkin. But I never get around to it. Aaaaaaaaargh! This year I will conquer you, pumpkin carving! *waves fist around in the air wildly* Ahem. Well, anyway, as I was saying, I just never seem … Read more

Un-Recipe Apple Pie + the Best Crust EVER – The Flourishing Abode

I don’t know who came up with the phrase “simple as pie”. Does that mean as simple as it is to make pie .. or as simple as it is to eat pie? Because the former is definitely not always easy … largely because of the fact that pie involves pie crust. However, my friend Lindsey recently made some *amazing* pie crust that has absolutely changed my view on crusts. For one thing, pastry is usually finicky and you have to be really careful on how you handle it. But this was SO low maintenance, easy to roll out and … Read more
