- ½ cup shortening
- 1 egg
- 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup white sugar
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ¾ cup sweetened condensed milk
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ⅓ cup granulated sugar for decoration
Begin by mixing all the ingredients except the flour in a bowl.
Gradually add flour, about two cups, until the dough becomes firm enough to roll out.
Roll the dough to about half an inch thick, then use a round biscuit cutter to cut out cookies.
Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a baking mat.
Sprinkle the tops with sugar.
Bake them in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 8 to 10 minutes, until lightly golden.
Let them cool before serving.
-
For a richer flavor, try substituting some of the milk with cream or condensed milk.
-
If the dough is too sticky, chill it for 15-20 minutes before rolling.
-
You can add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to the dough for a warm spice note.
