Well, a little while back, I asked you all what are your favorite road trip games, and mentioned an upcoming vlog about it … so here it is! (If you’re reading this in a reader or email, and can’t see the video above, just click here) By the way, after the little ending segment, there’s a bonus clip of us playing one of the road trip games. Keep in mind … the emphasis of that game is more on cacophony than being on key. ;)
Leave your thoughts and comments below – I always get excited when I get a new comment notification! :)
LOL! Oh I LOVE your video, great job banana watchers ;) Love and God Bless from England xxxx
Thanks, Amelia! :D England – how fun! We live in London … Kentucky. Not quite as impressive as the original London. ;)
Now I want to go on a road trip! I love all of those games:) I venture to say I have played them all except recreational math:)
As to decluttering, how is yours going? We need an update! Our bedroom seems to be the dumping ground, so I am actually planning to work on it today. I have improved it over the last couple of weeks. I usually feel like decluttering when I don’t have any major deadlines hanging over me. When I do have bigger deadlines, I hesitate to commit the time and energy to do it. I usually make a mess in the process, so that is partly why I hesitate. In the best scenario, one should not take out more than they could replace in a fairly short time. I guess I tend to be a marathon declutterer rather than a gradual one. I need to work on that.
What do you recommend doing with cast off items?
Oh, and in most versions of the banana game, commercial vehicles do not count.
Have a great day!
No way, I never knew that about the banana game! Learn something new everyday. :)
Decluttering started off great — it turned out a LOT of the stuff we were storing was just empty boxes!! Which we need to keep so we don’t have to corral more boxes when we move. We ended up deciding to draw out the process more than a week, because some other aspects of moving needed to be done right away (like following up on job hunting leads, etc.), and while we are still decluttering (I’m planning to work on our room today, too – also our dumping ground) we realized it didn’t have to be done first, but some of the others did need to be done right away. Plus we were very encouraged how much of the “stuff” we were talking about in the vlog was just empty boxes! Now I just need to make sure I don’t lose TOO much momentum!
As for getting rid of items, I have three main categories:
– Trash (regular trash + anything I think is too messed up to donate)
– Donate (usually Goodwill, but they have specific hours, and we just found a drop box where donations can be made any time benefiting the special olympics. We’ve done Freecycle before too, but to me it’s easier to just throw everything in a bag and drop it off at a donation center.)
– Sell (I’m planning to put some nicer items on craigslist to make a little extra money. Also, I have quite an inventory of vintage items I need to put on Etsy. To me, anyway, yard sales are more time/trouble than they’re worth, at least in our location.)
Have fun decluttering! :)
C.U.T.E. and fun. So fun you did it in the car!!!
Thanks Cami! Yeah, making videos in the car actually made the road trip even more fun, it definitely gives you something to do!
I am laughing! you guys are so! funny. I find it just delightful that your daughter actually did not react much. She was sitting there just as if this was the way her normal life is! LOL I’m guessing laughing and having fun IS her normal life!! Great job!
My hubby and I love to sing in the car so we play a game similar to “Name that Tune” : )
Decluttering has been the focus of my life! for the past year because we moved from a very large place to a very small place. Last summer we had about 12 garage sales! LOL. I’m like Bertina I am more of a marathon declutterer but I find that way too often! as soon as I get rid of something that has gone unused for many years I “need” it! LOL
Have fun and I’m praying Tim gets the perfect job!
Patti
Hehe, yeah, she’s a pretty good sport. Although, she seemed to not quite “get” sing-a-long, and you can see her just kind of shaking her head through most of it, haha! :)
Wow, 12 garage sales!! Oh, and isn’t it true you need something right after you get rid of it?? So often the case. But I am determined not to let it stop me! Tim and I were joking around that we needed to be ruthless – without any Ruth at all! :)
Thanks Patti! :)
Oh, and recreational math?……. oh my! Tim and Bob are kindred spirits!! heeheehee
Yeah, recreational math. *shakes head* Ah, math. It was never my best friend.
This was super adorable and so fun to watch! I’m definitely going to remember some of the impromptu drama games you guys mentioned. They sound like so much fun!
Good luck with the de-cluttering. I’ve always found that most of my clutter tends to build up in places that aren’t as open to visiting eyes. (For example, my closet, my storage spaces, under my bed…eee!) I usually just get the de-cluttering bug sometime in the spring or early summer, because I want everything to be fresh and clean and lovely for the warmer weather!
Thanks, Lacey! Yeah, there are tons of fun impromptu games, those are just a few!
Totally agree on the places that attract clutter are places guests don’t see. I guess I need to hold a full house tour every so often just to keep me on my toes, haha ;)
I just did a 4-part series on travelling with kids and two of my posts highlighted activities and games to help pass them time

Thanks, April!
I’m kinda with Tim on the recreational math thing! Did you ever play “24” in grade school? Where you have 4 single digit numbers and you have to figure out how to add/subtract/multiply/divide them so they equal 24? There are only a few combinations that don’t work, so I just keep my eye out for random numbers on the road (mile markers, license plates) and try to turn 4 of them into 24. I know, it’s an exciting life I lead.
As for decluttering, my husband and I moved from Tulsa, OK to Portland, OR a couple years ago. We committed to not taking anything that wouldn’t fit in one 7x8x9′ moving pod and our vehicles (one of which is a pickup truck). It was easier to let go of large furniture items, though, because we planned to move in with my parents for at least a year. Also, I’m not super sentimental and I loooooooove purging our possessions of excess. I think what I experience is akin to a runner’s adrenaline high. We only kept our bedroom set, washer and dryer, books, art, and cooking ware; everything else was donated, sold, or given away. I felt so free!
Oh, yeah, I remember playing 24! I did like that one. :)
Yeah, it really does feel great to get rid of stuff. To me, it’s a similar feeling to getting rid of debt. A weight lifted!
ok, so I’m probably too late with a reply, but better late than never; car/travel games we’ve played (outdated and showing my age here……) “beaver car”! what is this game? Well, remember the old station wagons with wood on the side? yeah, well, we, for some reason dubbed those “beaver cars” and the goal was to see who could find one first and yell out [softly :) ] “BEAVER CAR”.
Another game involved billboards/road signs, license plates of passed or passing cars, and/or any of the writing on semi’s (trailers included); it was called the alphabet game. Simply go from A to Z the quickest, pointing out the word w/the letter, such as from the sign “Exit ahead” – yell out “a” from the word “ahead”. You could go through one round using billboards only; then a second round using tractor-trailer wording; and then move to license plates.
BTW, after “beaver” cars became scarce, we moved to “VW’s, calling them “Doodle-bug”; but now, they are becoming obsolete…perhaps the car game of the future????? HYBRID!!!!!!!!!!
